markus wine co. Grüner Veltliner, Lodi
WHY WE LOVE IT:
- Markus grew up near Austria - the home of Grüner Veltliner - remarkable to grow it on American soil and craft with his capable hands
- 92 Points Wine Enthusiast
- Excellent food wine from the varietal's brisk, fruity nature
WINEMAKER: Markus Niggli (Atlas Peak, Borra Vineyards)
WHAT WE TASTED: This rare, single vineyard, 100% "groon" is delightful. Aromas and flavors of orange and peach, peach, peach, with a bit of herbs and mint that bumps up the volume. Some Sauv blanc expression without the grassiness - with brisk, mineral clean, not flabby finish. Medium body. We let it warm a bit before drinking to release all that goodness and weighty mouthfeel.
AVA DESIGNATED: Lodi
WHAT WE PAIRED:
- Roast turkey, stuffing and gravy
- White german sausage with sauerkraut and potatoes
- Pumpkin soup with pumpkin oil drizzle
- Dumplings and goulash
PERSONALITY:
North River Vineyards Block 3 Planted 2019: 100% Grüner Veltliner
Markus was contacted by longtime respected Lodi winegrower of North River Vineyards Block 3 and asked if he wanted any Grüner Veltliner from the very first planting of the variety in Lodi. The winegrower specifically had Markus in mind when he planted it in 2019 knowing Markus grew up not far from Austria, where the grape has a loyal following. While Markus is known for reinvigorating old vine vineyards, this was a proposition he couldn't pass up. We are thrilled he took it on. The wine is fabulous!
